Malu Fernandez has become pretty much the talk of the Pinoy blogosphere. Much has been said or can be read about her published bigotry and irresponsible journalism, not to mention her defamation; you need only to google her name on the internet to find out.
I first heard about her from Rina, who had been similarly enraged by the content of the article. Since then, the article has spread like wildfire. My initial reaction to the article had been no different from the infuriated OFWs and working middle-class Filipinos alike who had failed to understand her brand of humor and acerbic wit. Who the hell was she? How dare she have the audacity to hurl her elitist insults on fellow Filipinos and even defend that same unbecoming behavior?
I think nobody in their right mind would not be angered by such hateful words. It was she who unwittingly brought the wrath of the OFWs and a lot of other Filipinos upon herself in the first place. The demand of various affected groups was that she should issue a public apology and that the publishers of People Asia and Manila Standard Today ought to take full responsibility by giving Fernandez and her editors a disciplinary action.
As of this evening, she finally did. Malu Fernandez, according to the news, had finally made a public statement apologizing for her actions and had also resigned as columnist from both publications. It's about time.

I e-mailed you the jeepney photos already. =)
Thanks, Connie! :)
I already sent the email to the Quezon City government. Unfortunately, I couldn't attach the original photos on their email page. I sent the same email to MMDA Chairman Fernando (where I was able to attach the photos) and sent you a copy as well. Let's hope they respond.
Unfortunately, her rhetoric is not as uncommon as one might wish. Classism is rampant among Filipinos, no doubt influenced by years of colonization, the 20th century Americanization of the Philippines, and the natural socioeconomic competition that drives and is driven by capitalism.
